How To Determine Domain Authority
Before you can improve your domain authority, you should know more about it first. The following are facts about domain authority to help you better understand it:
- Domain authority is based on many factors.
- One of which is backlinks that point to your websites. Basically, it helps your website if high domain authority websites link back to your website.
- Domain authority is based on a scale from 1-100. The higher you get, the harder it becomes. Only a few websites have 100 domain authority such as Google and Facebook.
Now that we understand a bit more about domain authority. Let’s talk about how you can improve it!
How To Improve Your Website’s Domain Authority
For starters, it is important to have a good link profile. What you want to do is quite simple! Get good links and remove the bad ones(:
For example, if you have too many bad links, it can affect your domain authority.
What is a bad link?
Google reviews your website’s inbound links and if it’s coming from a website that is irrelevant or contains a ton of other bad links. Google might penalize your website which might remove your website from the search results.
So how do you get rid of bad links?
To get rid of bad links, you can reach out to the website owner and politely ask if he or she can remove it from their website. If they don’t respond or request for you to pay a fee to remove the link. You can disavow them instead to claim no responsibility.
Now that you’ve gotten rid of the bad links, it is time to gain some good links! When it comes to getting good links, you have 2 options:
- Option 1 – Pay a legitimate SEO agency to secure high-quality backlinks. Keep in mind, this can be a very expensive option with the risks involved.
- Option 2 – Create high-quality content that entices your readers to share and link back to. There are many bloggers who would much rather link back to a website than writing their own.
Personally, I prefer option 2 because it means my content marketing strategy is actually working. Best of all, it’s absolutely free and probably the best way to improve your domain authority.
In addition, here are a few more things you can do to improve your domain authority!
Make Sure Your Website Is SEO Ready
Before we get deeper into improving your domain authority. It is important to make sure your website is SEO ready. As explained by Moz, to improve your domain authority, you need to improve your overall SEO.
This includes the following: Navigation, Mobile-friendly, Bread Crumbs, URL structure, Meta Tags, Meta Descriptions, Header Tags, Word Count, Keywords, Alt Tags, Etc.
A good tool to use is the All-in-One SEO (download and install it in WordPress). Check out my list of must-have SEO tools.
Produce Content That Others Would Love To Link To
Hopefully by now, your website is SEO ready. The next step is to create content that others would love to link to. What I like to do is create information content that is relevant to my niche on a daily basis. For example, if someone wants to talk about email marketing, they can link to an article that I wrote about how to build an email list.
It does take a lot of time to create good informational content, but it is totally worth it when people are linking back to you! Remember, no pain no gain! Work hard and you will eventually see the fruits of your labor.
Leverage The Use Of Internal Linking
Besides getting good backlinks, it is equally important to leverage the use of internal linking. Internal linking is basically when you include a link of another one of your pages to provide more information. If you take a look at my blog posts, you will notice that I include internal links whenever it makes sense.
Internal linking delivers a better experience to both the reader and the search engines. A website that lacks internal linking is like dry flour. It’s hard to shape or turn into anything. Whereas, a website that uses internal linking is like dry flour with water mixed in. It becomes solid and can be shaped into anything.
The reason why I write daily is so that I have plenty of content to link back to. How often are you publishing new content on your website?
Remove Bad Backlinks
Yup, you have to go back and remove bad backlinks whenever you have time. Making money online is not a setup and collect money gig. Well, at least not how you make money online legitimately.
It’s quite annoying, but it’s definitely beneficial to remove bad backlinks whenever you can. Use your Google search console and search for the bad backlinks and remove them.
By checking regularly, you will always be one step ahead of your competition. From doing my recent survey for self-understanding. Most website owners are not checking their website regularly for bad backlinks. Which means if you do what they’re not doing. You’ll gain a huge advantage over them.
Trust me, you don’t want to start doing it after you get slapped by the search engine penalties. It’s almost like cleaning your room! The more frequent you clean it, the less hassle it is when you have to clean it many months later.—Personally, I try to clean it up on a monthly basis.
Understand That Increasing Your Domain Authority Takes Time
Besides doing all the above which will help increase your domain authority. There’s another factor that most people forget and that is the age of your domain.
Generally, if the website does everything right. The older their domain, the higher their domain authority. You can check a website’s domain age by clicking here.
Keep in mind though, age is just a number. There are other important factors such as lack of fresh content, use of outdated SEO methods, and lots of bad backlinks will lower your domain authority.
As mentioned before, content marketing contributes to the rise of your domain authority. Which means it takes time, so don’t expect to have a high domain authority overnight. Give it time and you will see it go up!
In Conclusion
To increase your domain authority, you will have to do everything the right way and let time take its course. As long as you optimize your website and content for your readers and SEO. You will start to naturally receive good backlinks. All you have to do is to stay consistent with producing high-quality content that delivers shareable information.
