Today, I’d like to go over some affiliate marketing tips for beginners. Approximately 95% of affiliate marketers fail at making money online and it comes as no surprise why most people end up quitting.
You see, a lot of beginners get into the industry assuming that the money will come easy. Who can blame them though because that’s what I thought?
There are so many get-rich-quick schemes claiming that you can get rich fast, but nothing could be further from the truth!
In this article, I will go over 2 tips that would separate you from the 95% of affiliate marketers who are likely to end up quitting due to minimal results.
Affiliate Marketing Tips For Beginners
Tip #1. Own The Customers
Any successful business requires a customer-base and when you get into affiliate marketing, you should treat it as a regular business.
Most affiliate marketers will tell you, the way to make money through affiliate marketing is by promoting affiliate product(s).
That is true, but the cup is half empty. Sure, you need to promote affiliate product(s), but you need to do so strategically.
Your typical affiliate marketer would find relevant affiliate products from sources like Amazon, Clickbank, ShareASale, etc.
Next, they would buy traffic and have it sent directly to the advertisers landing page.— Their goal is to earn more than what they spent.
Here’s the problem with this method:
- You don’t own the customer, you are actually giving away customers. Basically, you are spending your own money to send traffic to the advertiser. If they make money off of your paid traffic, they will give you a small percentage. If they don’t make the sale, they lost nothing and you lost money? Does that sound fair to you?
- There is no guarantee that you will make more than what you spend on advertisement. In a sense, you are gambling, but not at a casino. First, you’re giving away your traffic to the advertisers landing page (slot machine). Next, you’re hoping that they convert your traffic into sales (hoping to win a few games). In the end, you’re hoping to make a profit or worst-case scenario, break even.— Unfortunately, that’s not reality and you will likely spend more than what you make.
- Even if you do end up making sales, it will only be a one-time thing. Let’s say you do make a sale! Well first of all, congratulations. However, because the customer belongs to the company that sold your prospect a product. Your prospect belongs to them and not you.— You have no way of contacting this customer anymore because you didn’t capture their information such as email address.
You see, the problem with not owning your customer is that you will not earn additional commissions if your referred company ends up selling more to that customer in the future.
The biggest flaw in this affiliate marketing approach is that you are always going to spend money on traffic to help grow another person’s business. This leads us to the second tip on how to own your customers!
Tip #2. Build An Email List
I can’t stress enough about the importance of building your email list from the very beginning. I didn’t do this at first and I still regret it to this day. If someone actually told me the importance of building an email list, my list would probably be 2 or 3 times the size of what it is now.
Most beginners don’t start an email list right away because they feel like it’s a waste of time and effort. I had the exact same mentality. I questioned the importance because I didn’t have much traffic, so why build an email list when it relies heavily on traffic.
It’s a numbers game…
The more traffic you get, the more likely someone will opt-in to your email list.
The good news is, AWeber doesn’t charge you a dime as long as you have 0-500 subscribers in your email list.
When you build an email list, you are building your own customer base. People don’t opt-in to your newsletter if they are not interested in your offers.
Here’s what you should do with your email list…
Instead of sending your traffic to your advertiser’s landing page, you should send your traffic to an opt-in page where you can capture their information. Once you’ve built a sizable list, you can start promoting affiliate product(s) directly to your subscribers.
The benefit of doing so is that you own the customer, so you can continue to recommend products and services designed to solve their problems.
In Conclusion
The best way to make money online through affiliate marketing is by treating it like a real business. A real business requires repeat customers.
If you follow my tips, you will be far ahead of most affiliate marketers in the field. I can’t guarantee you will get rich by applying my tips, but I’m confident that you will do much better than your typical affiliate marketer.
