Do You Really Need To Have A .Com Domain?

Do You Really Need To Have A .Com Domain?

Birds of a feather flock together. Last week, I was talking with a friend who is also learning how to make money online. He asked me the importance of having a .com domain. After all, most good domain names are taken, so he wondered if it was possible to choose something other than .com.

Theoretically, there is an infinite number of .com domains available. The problem is not the .com extension, it is finding a good domain name that comes with a .com extension.

Like any brand out there, you want a domain name that is brandable, memorable, keyword-rich, and short. That’s the hard part! To help you understand the importance, which of the following domain name would you choose if you could?

https://apple.com or https://appledevicesincorporated.com

His existing blog comes with the .com extension, so he wondered if he were to choose something else such as .net, would it take him a long time to reach the level of success compared to his .com extension.

It’s a reasonable question because he cares very much about the name of his blog. Sometimes the perfect name just isn’t available for the .com extension anymore. Obviously, my #1 choice is a .com extension. It’s more preferable compared to .net, .org, .us, .info, .biz, etc.

Time Has Changed The Importance Of Domains And Domain Extensions

If you really think about it, most of your traffic comes from referrals, social media, or organic searches. People are more likely to click on a link that directs them to your blog rather than manually inputting it in the search bar. As a result, owning a .com domain is not as important anymore.

There is a benefit to using the .com extension though. It’s the standard domain extension that people will type before anything else. Therefore, if you tell someone your blogs name. They will automatically assume that it’s a .com domain.

You Have More Options Now

Over the years, more and more TLD’s (Top-Level Domain) are available. A simple search on websites like GoDaddy or Namecheap will give you plenty of options.

At the end of the day, the success of your website depends on your input such as marketing, content creation, etc. In terms of choosing a domain name, an easy to remember domain name with a .net extension is better than a long and annoying domain name with a .com extension.

If you absolutely must have a good domain name with a .com extension. You can always check out domain marketers, but bare in mind… it will cost you a pretty penny. As you can see from the example above…

I’m actually contemplating on getting it haha! Tell me if I should…I might have to sell myself for it. Just kidding.
