The money is in the list! Email marketing is a critical part of running a successful online business. In fact, you can generate thousands of leads and sales if you do it properly.
However, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is forgetting who your subscribers are. Now the ultimate goal with your email list is to make money, but that doesn’t mean you should forget that they are human beings.
Today I was talking to a reader who also started a blog asking about how much money he can make from his email list. From my perspective, the subscribers in his eyes are only dollar signs.
Like blogging to make money online. The more you use money as the motivation, the harder it is for your content to resonate with your readers. The less you view your subscribers as dollar signs and profits, the better your emails will convert.
Imagine yourself emailing 2 new friends. One of them sends you a friendly greeting on a regular basis. He or she truly wants to know how you are doing. Whereas the other friend is always trying to sell you something. Which friend would you trust more?
Focus On Delivering Value
Like content marketing, your goal is to deliver value. The same applies to email marketing. Once you get a subscriber, they are giving you the opportunity to gain their trust.
That doesn’t mean they won’t unsubscribe if they find you annoying. Unlike cutting someone off in real life, unsubscribing is just a button away. This is what you want to avoid.
Let’s say your blog is about losing weight. And the reason why someone would subscribe to your newsletter is that you’re offering weight reduction tips.
What you should do is to occasionally follow-up and ask about their progress and if they need any additional support with a few tips as well. If you run a blog, you can also point them to a blog post that would best benefit him or her.
Your readers will really appreciate it because you’re not trying to sell them anything. People don’t like to be sold to. Instead, they are more likely to buy if they feel like it’s going to benefit them.
What You Should Do
Okay, making money is still the goal, so here’s what I recommend that you do. Obviously, your email sequence is totally up to you. Definitely test it out and see what works best for your subscribers.
The 10 to 1 rule:
- You should send 10 helpful emails with tips without the intention to sell anything.
- After every 10 emails, you can recommend a service or product that makes you money.
The more value that you can deliver, the better your results are. The goal is to build a relationship with your subscribers. If your subscribers are benefiting from your emails, then they should have no reason to unsubscribe.
Also, some affiliate programs offer email sequences that you can integrate into your email marketing campaign. These are pre-written for you, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
Instead of regurgitating the same email, you should take the information and re-write it. The reason why is because many others are using the exact pre-written emails which makes it super unoriginal.
Using A Reputable Email Marketing Service Provider
There are many available services for email marketing. Choosing the right one from the start will save you a lot of headaches. When I first started, I used mailerlite (not an affiliate link) because they are free to use for your first 1,000 subscribers.
It was great until I realized that the delivery rate wasn’t that good. Plus they deactivated my account after using it for 2 months. Keep in mind, they do review your account before approving you.
I didn’t get reported for spam or received any complaints. Without much explanation, my account was deactivated. That’s why you should always export your email list at least once a month. I literally lost all of my subscribers for making this very mistake.
That’s when I decided to try AWeber. I’ve been using them for almost a full year now and I have nothing to complain about them. It’s very easy to use and integrates with many of my premium plugins.

In Conclusion
The money is in the list only if you do it properly. It’s like blogging, you won’t make any money blogging if you don’t deliver value and solve a problem. You won’t make any money through email marketing if you only focus on selling.
Remember choosing a solid email marketing service provider and treating your email subscribers like human beings will help you reach greater success.
It’s definitely a win-win situation. By choosing a solid email marketing service provider, you won’t have to constantly search for a new provider. By delivering value to your subscribers, they are less likely to unsubscribe and more likely to take your word for when you recommend a product and service.
