Why Is Affiliate Marketing So Hard? It’s really not.

Why is Affiliate marketing so hard? Well in my opinion, Affiliate marketing is not hard, but it’s certainly not easy either. Is it still worth it to start in 2020?

Unfortunately, there are lots of deceptive individuals who makes it sound like affiliate marketing is easy. They make it seem like making money online requires no effort at all.

That’s why when you really get into affiliate marketing. Effort sounds hard.

Without a doubt, affiliate marketing is not an easy industry to succeed in. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes due to the increase of competition.

The internet is rapidly gaining new users every year, so the supply of audience will only increase, but that would only benefit already established affiliate marketers who are ranked high on search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

But with the right attitude and mindset. You too can be in the game and make great money like those who are already established.

Now let’s get on with why affiliate marketing is so hard.

Why Is Affiliate Marketing So Hard?

Here are a few reasons that can make affiliate marketing appear difficult.

#1. Having The Wrong Mentality

Affiliate marketing is an industry that is hard to succeed it requires the right mentality.

There is a saying, “You are your worst enemy.”

I remember when I first started searching for ways to make money online. I was not looking for hard work like blogging consistently and trying to rank up on Google.

I was searching for a quick way with minimal effort to make money.

Well, you can figure out how that turned out since I’m blogging now.

#2. Not Willing To Work For It

When you have the mentality of not wanting to work hard and take the easy way out, you might as well give up before wasting any more of your time.

Affiliate marketing requires a lot of work, time, and dedication to succeed. If you are looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, affiliate marketing is definitely not for you.

First, let me ask you this, “How long would it take you to start making money in a profession such as a doctor?

Let’s say it takes you 10 years to get your degree and the time it takes to pay off your student loan, that equals to… a very long time.

Unlike the get-rich-quick schemes that offer you nothing but lies, affiliate marketing will require real work, but the pay off is a lifechanging.

That’s why I recommend regularly updating your website with high-quality content because the more content you have, the more indexed pages you will have on the search engines.

And of course, don’t forget to market your content.

#3. Working On Multiple Websites

In a conventional job, you are assigned to a specific task, so it’s not difficult to focus on just that. However, a lot of beginners start off by creating too many niche websites making it difficult to manage.

It’s an honest mistake because maybe you have multiple passions and want to increase your potential income with multiple sources.

However, it can become difficult very quickly to manage more than one website at a time.

I can’t imagine how much time it would take to make sure all of your websites receive the attention needed to rank high on Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Remember, having 1 successful website is better than having 10 failed websites.

Even though you’ve applied everything you’ve learned from successful affiliate marketers, it can still reduce the outcome of success if you are focusing on too many things at once.

Why do you think basketball players focus only on basketball?

They are great athletes and I’m sure they can do well in other sports, but it’s easier to succeed in one area versus multiple areas.

#4. Spreading Yourself Too Thin

The internet is full of good and bad information. When it comes to making money online, you can find an endless amount of programs that promise to help you make money fast.

I’ve personally fallen victim to many of these so-called get-rich-quick programs over the years. One thing they all have in common is emptying your wallet quickly. Ironic isn’t it?

You can learn how to identify these types of scam by clicking here.

They promise to help you make money fast but would require you to make some sort of payment before they reveal their secret. Did it work? Absolutely not.

As a matter of fact, this makes affiliate marketing very difficult, because you are paying most of your attention to the get-rich-quick schemes and not so much in affiliate marketing.

I can understand though because who would want to focus on affiliate marketing when you are told about a method to make money quick?

Besides the get-rich-quick schemes, there are other legitimate ways to make money online such as drop shipping.

I am not discouraging you from drop shipping. As long as you focus on one thing, your chance of success will increase exponentially.

The point is, if you want to be a successful affiliate marketer, you want to focus only on affiliate marketing. Don’t let the other methods to make money online distract you from reaching your goal.

In Conclusion

So is it worth it to start an affiliate marketing business in 2020?

The answer is yes, but before you begin to venture into affiliate marketing. You must first understand that affiliate marketing requires real work, real effort. You won’t see any success if you expect to make money by simply placing banner ads and affiliate links.

The more you expect to make at the beginning, the faster you will end up failing.

You can absolutely earn a full-time income online as long as you keep a positive mindset and treat your online gig as a real business.

I hope this was helpful! If you have any questions, please leave a comment down below and I will try my best to help you out.

  1. I hear you Eric!

I was in the same boat, looking for ways to make money quickly, and discovered that most f them are just out there to fill their own pockets and leave you broke.

The best ones are those fancy sales video pages (boy! are they long) that you are forced to watch to the end before any links, and when they do appear, you still have no idea what you are supposed to do and find yourself in the emergency room receiving shock treatment to get your heart going again after seen the price.

You hit it on the nail! It takes hard work and commitment, and don't expect to make money for a while. If you build a business with passion and interest your hard work pays off in the long term.

    Excellent articles

  2. Hello Jonathan,

Haha! Fortunately, I didn't have to go to the emergency room when I find a fancy sales video page! As a matter of fact, I try to look for them, so I can review them here to keep my visitors up-to-date on the latest  schemes.

    I don't do it enough, but I'm going to start more often in 2018! I've already made money with my website, but it's nothing impressive. I stopped focusing on the money after the first month and just blog for fun(;

I wish you great success in the upcoming year of 2018,

  3. Great article Eric! I totally agree with you; affiliate marketing is hard work! I thoroughly enjoy it, but you do have to be patient and not expect to profit without putting in the work. When looking for ways to make money online there are so many ways that you can be ripped off it does make it hard for the general trust of the public, which in turn makes it hard for those of us trying to honestly make money online. Once again, great job! Good luck with your future endeavors!

  5. Hello Shwana,

Thanks for your comment! How is your online business going? If you need any feedback, please don't hesitate to ask! I thoroughly enjoy watching the success of people who are serious about making money online.

    Best of luck,

  6. Eric, I really enjoying reading through your Affiliate marketing in 2018 post. I agreed with everything you have said and found it rewarding to read things you have suggested and I am already doing. For me it is just common sense to start small and build up the one thing you have vs. start several small things at once and expect crazy results. You have to perfect the craft first before you can expand. I also liked that you suggested to use affiliate marketing as a hobby at first! I just started about a month ago but I have been consistent and constant in getting material out. Each day I give myself a goal, either to pass more tutorial lessons or write a content rich post. I am curious how long you have been at it with your page and how your income has prospered since you started? I am still new but excited to see ANY kinds of result!

  7. Hello Evan,

Keep at it!(; I've been doing this for about 2 months and total profit after all expenses is at about $200.00. Nothing to brag about, but it's money I wouldn't have made otherwise. My goal is to get a new computer with only money earned from this business. My current laptop is so old and slow, it makes it hard to do anything haha!

It will take time for your website to build authority, so take your time and enjoy what you do. The money will follow in the future.

I like to see our websites as a garden and the content/blogs as seeds. The more quality ones you have, the better the results are when it's time to harvest.

I wish you best of luck,

  8. Thanks Eric, another great post on your website highlighting the reality of making money online. Its a lot of work and requires time and patience. I think its tough for beginners because they don't know where to start a can be easily scammed. Your blog on how to avoid those scams was good too.

  9. Hello Dave,

Thanks for you kind Regards! You're absolutely right! There are too many get rich quick schemes online and it's ruining the mindset of true potential internet marketers. This is why I decided to shed some light and give an honest opinion on affiliate marketing.

    Kind Regards,

  10. I really like your post a lot about the hard work it takes to make money online. The pictures are very relevant and make the post that much more enjoyable to read. It is all about persistence and believing in yourself. Affiliate marketing is one of the hardest things out there because so many people fall for shiny object syndrome and get distracted. I think the graphic about having one website versus multiple ones is so important because it is better to be very good at one thing online and stick to it than try a bunch of different niches only to fail due to throwing so many darts around. Nice work!

  11. Hi Eric! I really enjoyed reading your post. Several of the things you said really hit home. I know what it's like to invest a lot of time and energy into a career. In fact, I'm currently in my residency training in Houston for medicine. I'm only about 3 1/2 months into affiliate marketing and boy has it been a series of ups and downs. The one thing that struck a chord with me the most is what you said about treating affiliate marketing "like a hobby". It really is hard to write without expecting anything in return, but what you said is so true. Merry Christmas!

  12. Hello Elan,

Thank you for your input(; Hard work definitely pays off in the end. Most importantly, have fun and the money will follow. It's definitely a mental game though because I've had doubts in the beginning as well, but I've since changed my game plan and decided to just help and learn.

    Kind Regards,

  13. Hello Kent,

Thanks for your kind feedback(: It is definitely hard to treat something as an hobby especially when the whole reason behind it is to make money. I remember in the beginning, I would constantly check to see if I made any money and it's very discouraging when it shows that I've made absolutely nothing.

This is when I began to realize that it's because my website is too new and I don't have enough to offer to my visitors. That's when I changed my mindset. Instead of being discouraged by not making money, I decided to treat it as a hobby. This will give me enough time to establish a website that will make money in the future without feeling discouraged from the lack of revenue.

Fortunately, I'm already making money to cover the upfront cost! I wish you great success and Merry Christmas (:

    Kind Regards,

  14. Hey Eric, great article here!!

I see a lot of people who jump into affiliate marketing thinking it is quick and easy money right from the start. Once they find out how much work actually goes into it then they become discouraged and just quit before making any real progress. Unfortunately with live in a society that worships instant gratuity.

To those of you who are really putting in work, keep it up and don't lose that inner flame!!

  15. In my earlier research on affiliate marketing, I did not come across any reading with realistic information. I got the impression that affiliate marketing was an easy walk through and in no time I would be earning money. Luckily I came across Wealthy Affiliate and signed up for the free training which put me on the right path. Wealthy Affiliate offers the right training to approach affiliate marketing and I feel confident that I will be successful in 2018.

  16. Hello Gabriel,

Yup, that's why majority of affiliate marketers fail, not because affiliate marketing is ineffective. It's the people behind it that gives up too easily.

This is why those who gets into affiliate marketing needs to develop a certain mindset before starting. Otherwise, they will give up and waste their time and money.

The more you give, the more you get really applies here. I wish you great success!

    Kind Regards,

  17. Hello Carol,

You made a very wise decision to be a part of Wealthy Affiliates! It's a great foundation for beginners because it's very easy to follow with their step by step tutorial.

The most difficult parts of building an online business is made easy with their platform. Building a website in 30 seconds with hosting was unheard of a few years ago.

As a matter of fact, I started with ZERO knowledge with website building or online marketing. I can't say that I am EXTREMELY knowledgeable, but I am definitely confident at what I do.

    Kind Regards,

  18. Hiya Eric,

    I enjoyed reading your article.

You're right about most people wanting to make money quickly, but not wanting to work for it.

I've done a bit of affiliate marketing myself, and as you implied, get-rich-quick and affiliate marketing don't belong in the same sentence (well not nowadays anymore - and it's getting more "difficult").

Your advice is really good about concentrating on one blog / website - especially when starting out.

Unfortunately I had to learn that one the hard way.

  19. Hello Sally,

Thank you very much for your kind feedback! This is why I decided to educate people who are thinking about getting into affiliate marketing. The initial mindset and expectation is very important. If one comes in thinking about getting rich fast will end up quitting very early before seeing results.

If you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask!

    Kind Regards,

  20. Great read. You hit it on point. It is hard succeed in affiliate marketing and the competetion is increasing daily. Yet success is more than possible.

I have been at it for 7 years now and am just starting to get somewhere. I think its all in learning and applying what earn.

  21. Hello Wolfgins,

You are absolutely right! Everyone is different and the success rate depends on how much time and effort you want to put into your online business. I wish you great success!

    Kind Regards,

  22. Hi Eric:

Your words on this post ring very true. Affiliate Marketing is hard work. It takes commitment and drive and a no quit attitude. But that is true in any career, right? There is no such thing as "free money." You have to make an investment to get a return. But the investment in affiliate marketing and especially Wealthy Affiliate will pay dividends. You just have to work for it. Thanks and best to you in the future.

  23. I'm glad I came across your post Eric.
I'm new to Affiliate Marketing and thought it would be so easy to make money.
Create a website, put some posts up and wait for it to start churning in the money.
I found out that it was not so. It is HARD work!!

You're right. Why is it so hard? Because it takes hard work, perseverance, consistency and determination. I find if I don't work on my website on a daily basis, it's so easy for me to become complacent. Then before you know it that day quickly turns into a week then I feel as if I've missed out a lot and not want to continue.

I'm currently working full-time and trying to manage my website.
Do you think I can still be successful as an Affiliate Marketer or do you think I need to be doing this full-time?

  24. Hello Jacqueline,

I wouldn't replace your job unless you have a good amount saved to take care of bills for at least one year.  I live in a very expensive city, so I couldn't afford to quit my job right away.

I currently work 10 hours a day and still manage on my website (: As a matter of fact, I work on my website after work and on my days off. You can do it as long as you can manage.

    I wish you great success,

  25. Hello Mike,

You are absolutely right! To me, this is more like investing in myself. As my online business progress, my understanding of my business expands.

I have confidence that if you try your best and never give up? You will succeed. How long does it take it make money online? That depends on how much time you want to invest.

    Good luck,

  26. OK. Thanks, Eric.
My city is rather expensive as well so I think I'll have to fit in time around my work schedule and on the weekends.
    Wishing you success too.

  27. Hello Jacqueline,

The good thing about affiliate marketing is, you can do it at your own pace. I'm not saying 1 article per month otherwise other affiliate marketers will outrank you haha. As long as you regularly update or publish new content and engaging with your visitors. More than likely, they will come back and refer others to you. Networking will give you the traffic needed to succeed.

I wish you best of luck and Happy New Year,

  28. Narendra m.r.datasolutions

Affiliate marketing is not easy like you said. Thanks for your tips. It has made me realized why I was struggling to make money online.

  29. Hello Narendra,

You are very welcome! Continue to push and put your heart into your online business and one day, you will succeed.
