Writing your first blog post can seem like a daunting experience. After starting a blog, there’s a lot to take in such as creating your privacy policy, about page, contact page, etc. That’s why most beginners take things step-by-step.

First, you need to understand why you want to write blog posts. Text-based content does very well on search engines like Google. It’s a crucial strategy for any business trying to generate leads, grow their email list, and generate sales.

Unlike a journal, your blog post should cater to your readers. You’ll want to use your blog posts to build a community of loyal readers. So in this short article, I will provide you with a few tips on how to write your first blog post.

#1. Research Your Niche

Before you get started, you’ll want to research your niche. In simple terms, find out what your audience are looking for. You see, people who are searching on Google are looking for solutions. They have a question and they want answers. It is your job to provide them with the most accurate answer possible.

For example, if you’re in the home appliances niche, you’ll want to produce blog posts such as the top 10 highly recommended refrigerators for 2020.

Another example if you’re in the make money online niche. You’ll want to produce blog posts on how to make money online. If you do a bit of research, you’ll learn that there are various methods such as affiliate marketing, eCommerce, online surveys, etc.

So before you produce your first article, do yourself a favor and do the research. Understanding what your audience wants will help you become much more successful.

#2. Research Your Competition

You might feel compelled to write your first blog post based on what you think is going to be a home run. But before you do anything, understanding what your competitors are doing will help you gain an advantage.

There are tools such as SEMrush that allows you to “spy” on your competitors. It will allow you to track where they are getting their traffic from, what keywords they are ranking for, etc.

A little tip that I got from Neil Patel is to research your competitor’s backlinks. This will tell you who is linking back to them and which blog post.

So if you can create a similar blog post but with way more detail. You can send an email to these website owners to request for them to use your blog post instead. After all, they’re just looking to provide more value to their own readers.

If you can provide immense value, I don’t see why they wouldn’t use your blog post as an external link instead.

#3. Create A Blog Post Template

A blog template can help smooth out your writing process. It’s pretty much why we learn to use templates when writing essays back in school. They don’t do it to annoy you, they do it because it works.

For example, your blog post template should contain the following:

  • Heading
  • Subheadings
  • Body Paragraphs
  • Conclusion

Organizing your masterpiece after you’ve written your content is much more time-consuming. If you’re going to do something, why not do it right the first time?

The only time you should go back to your blog posts to edit is to tweak or add information. You don’t want to go back to change your subheadings or move them around. I mean you can and I’ve done that in the past. But I’d much rather get it done right the first time around.

4#. Don’t Focus On The Word Count

Many bloggers will tell you to produce a blog post with a minimum of 1000 words. That’s not wrong because you do want your content to be lengthy. Longer articles tend to do better on search engines because they have more keywords to rank for.

However, my suggestion is to aim for that goal, but don’t focus too much on it. Trying too hard to stretch out your blog posts will make it harder to read and less desirable.

At the beginning of my blogging career, I made it a mission to write at least 1000 words per blog post. Nowadays, I don’t care about the word count. Instead, I’ll just write until I believe that my blog post gets the point across.

In Conclusion

Learning how to write your first blog post is quite simple. You’re pretty much halfway there by having the desire to write your first blog post. Like most things in life, there is a process and it’s very easy as long as you follow the process.

Before you write anything, research is extremely important. Whether it is to research your niche or research your competition. Understanding what your audience is looking for will help you create content that they’ll want to read.

Creating a blog post template and focusing on the quality of your content will help provide your audience with a great experience. It’s all about building a long-term relationship with your readers.
