During my trip to New York City, I was looking for ways to reduce the weight of my luggage and backpack. I didn’t like the idea of going to places while carrying a heavy laptop. So I wondered if I could run my online business using just an iPad? This question came up multiple times and I just had to put it to the test.

You see unlike a traditional brick-and-mortar business, I don’t have a storefront to bring with me. I don’t have physical employees that I have to manage. That’s the beauty of running an online business; low cost and flexibility.

I wanted to know if it was possible to get rid of my laptop altogether and just get all of my work done using an iPad. It’d make my traveling more enjoyable plus an iPad can last pretty long without having to be plugged in and it’s extremely light!

In this article, I want to share with you if it’s possible to run your online business using an iPad! And also what you will need in order to get things done using an iPad. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Note: I didn’t have an iPad with me during my trip, but I did try it once I got back home.

Bluetooth Keyboard

First, I think having a Bluetooth keyboard is the most important tool you’ll need if you want to run your online business on an iPad. The on-screen keyboard is perfectly fine for quick messages, but if you’re typing out a blog or sending out an email.

A real Bluetooth keyboard will make your life a thousand times easier.

The good news is, there are many options for various iPads. You can just go to your local BestBuy store and price match a Bluetooth Keyboard with Amazon.

Install The Following Apps

WordPress: Even though you can just log-in to your WordPress blog by typing your Yourblogsname.com/wp-login.php. I still recommend using their dedicate app for iPhones and iPads.

Google Analytics: Track your traffic count, bounce rate, demographics, etc. This app will allow you to view everything on-the-fly. Also, you only need to log in once!

iMovie: If you like to integrate videos into your marketing strategy, you might want to install iMovie. It’s not as professional as the tools you find for computers, but it will do its job.

Social Media Apps: With an iPad, you can install all of your Social Media profiles, so you can do your marketing each time you publish a new blog post!

Keynote: This is currently one of the best presentation applications in the market. It allows you to create and run presentations without needing to carry a bulky computer.

LogMeIn: Similar to TeamViewer, LogMeIn allows you to access your computer without being physically present.

You Can, But You Shouldn’t

Personally, I think you can absolutely run your online business using just an iPad, but I just don’t recommend it after trying it for myself. The agonizing that you get with the lightweight portability is just not worth it.

I use my iPad to read blog posts, but I much prefer using my laptop when creating my blog posts. With the iPad, it’s extremely hard to add photos to your blog especially if you have to do some cropping. The biggest problem for me is not having access to a mouse.

To keep this article short and straightforward. As long as the iPad is not your only way to access your online business, feel free to use it. However, if you only have an iPad, you might want to invest money in a laptop or desktop.

Have you tried running your business on an iPad? How long did it take until you decided to just go back to your laptop? Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment down below!

  1. This is great info. I've heard people say you can run a business using just your phone or tablet, but I've often wondered how people manage to do that! Thanks for testing it out and sharing your thoughts!

  2. Hello Kayla,

It's definitely possible, but not easy. I still prefer running my online business via my laptop than any available tablet.

    Cheers,
    Eric
