My friend recently joined in on the journey to working from home, so he can spend more time doing what he wants to do. Instead of creating a blog like mine, he decided to just start an Ecommerce store.
There’s nothing wrong with that, but he is struggling to get traffic to his website. You can check out his store by clicking here. Whether you are starting an online or offline business (brick and mortar), traffic is essential because without customers, you wouldn’t make any sales.
When it comes to E-commerce stores, you need to have an aesthetically pleasing website, quality product(s), and good advertising if you want to bring in traffic. However, there is one piece that most people forget to incorporate into their marketing strategy.—content marketing.
- Without content, you will have a tough time ranking well in the search engines. Which means, you will miss out on some juicy organic traffic for free.
- Most people don’t buy on their first visit. With the power of the internet, lots of consumers are spending countless hours of research before making a buying decision.
- Having content will give your potential customers the opportunity to research and buy the product without having to leave your store.
Now that you see the importance of having content on your E-commerce site, here are a few content strategies that you should incorporate into your online store.
Start a Blog!
Keep your audience up-to-date on the latest and best thing available in their niche. If you are in the weight loss industry, you might want to talk about the latest dietary supplement or fitness equipment. You can even compare product(s) that you personally carry, to help your readers make an informative decision.
Use Relevant Keywords
Before you go ahead and publish your freshly written blog post. You want to ensure that relevant keywords are added. Keywords are words or phrases typed into the search engine. For example: “How To Make Money Online.”
Another example: I am running an E-commerce store on toys and I want to write a blog post listing the top 10 recommended toys for 2018. I would use keywords such as “top 10 recommended toys for children in 2018.” Whatever you write, make sure to include keywords that are relevant to what your content/blog is about.
Personally, I use a tool known as the Jaaxy Keyword and Niche Research Tool. It helps me find relevant keywords and it also displays how competitive the keyword is to rank well in the search engines. You can learn more about this tool by clicking here.
Images are extremely important when it comes to an E-commerce store. Your customers are there to buy a product and it helps if they can see what it actually looks like. Besides offering a visual representation to your customers, it will also help you rank on the search engines.
When uploading images, you should include “ALT tags” to let the search engines know what the image is about, so it can properly rank on the search engines.—I’ve personally purchased a few products after doing a Google Image search.
Similar to images, videos are great for ranking on the search engines. However, the real purpose of a video is to increase engagement with your potential customer. Videos can be used for product demonstrations or comparisons. You never know, maybe you’re a video away from helping the customer from making a buying decision!
Note: Make sure you optimize your video with keywords to help customers find your product(s) when searching on Google, Bing, or Yahoo.
Display Related Product(s)
No matter what you sell, there are usually alternatives. Sometimes they can have almost identical features with the only difference is the price. This gives your customers more options to choose from. Some will spend more because of brand loyalty and some will spend less to save money.
Offer A Product Guide
It’s always a plus if you include how to use the product that you sell. It gives them an idea of the kind of experience he or she will have before buying the product. In a sense, this will plant a seed into their mind and make them visualize about actually having the product in front of them.
Request For Testimonials!
Testimonials are a great way to build a positive reputation with your potential customers. It comes from an unbiased point of view, unlike your typical sales pitch. If done correctly, you will be able to turn more prospects into buying customers.
Add a Questions and Answers Section for each product
No matter what you’re selling, you will always receive questions from your customers. By creating a question and answer section for each product, you are eliminating the number of similar questions being asked.
This is what I call a win and win situation. Your future customers will know exactly what the answer is to their question. You can also use keywords to increase your search engine presence.
Build an Email List
Businesses survive on repeat business. I tell this to my readers fairly often when they’re starting their own online business. Collecting your customer’s emails will allow you to market to them over and over again.
First of all, don’t see it as spam because they’re on your email list for a reason. They either purchased your product(s) or is interested in your product(s).
I can tell you from my own experience that I’ve returned to many online stores to purchase new product(s) simply because they sent me an email about it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known or would’ve searched elsewhere.

Request For Customer Feedback
Customers like to hear from people who have already used the product before. They want real unbiased testimonials which aid their buying decision. Did they enjoy the product? How was the shipping? Was the product delivered in perfect condition?
I can tell you this, 9 out of 10 times while shopping online, I would check out customer feedback. If someone has a poor experience, I would see how the store responds. If they ignore the customer, I wouldn’t want to do business with them.
