Affiliate Marketing Is Not Just About Selling

Affiliate Marketing Is Not Just About Selling

Sure, in order to earn a commission, you must generate sales. However, affiliate marketing is not just about selling.

When operating an affiliate marketing business, it is important that you focus on taking care of your audience instead of selling the products to earn a commission.

When you are too focused on selling a product, you forget what your viewers are actually looking for.

In my opinion, affiliate marketing reminds of me being a car salesman.

A good car salesman will always try to find out exactly what type of vehicle will best fit their customers lifestyle.

For example, if the client is buying a vehicle for his family with a newborn. A small sedan might not be the best option.

The same applies to affiliate marketing. You have to accept that you can’t sell a single product to everyone.

You’ll need the right targeted audience for the specific product.

Affiliate Marketing Success Is A Process

First of all, people don’t buy from those that they don’t trust. In the car buying industry. Cars don’t really sell themselves.

The salesperson develops a relationship with their customers by providing them with the right information to lead them toward a purchase.

Building A Readership (Trust)

For affiliate marketing, you don’t have any physical contact with your audience which makes it even harder to build trust.

One of the most commonly visited pages on a website is the about page. This page gives the viewers an idea of who they dealing with.

Once you have that covered, you can then provide information to help your viewers make an informative decision.

This is usually done in the form of a blog post or YouTube reviews.

Creating Valuable And Helpful Content

Regardless of your niche, your content should always be written to inform rather than to sell.

Most people are not impulsive buyers. Quite often, research is done through various lengths of time before a buying decision is made.

As an affiliate marketer, you can create content that helps these researchers make an informative decision.

Your affiliate links are then used to help you earn a commission if the researchers decide to buy.

Building Your Email List To Further Develop Relationship

No matter how amazing your content is. Some people just aren’t ready to buy yet. And that’s okay!

That’s why affiliate marketers, as well as other online businesses, use a marketing strategy called email marketing.

If you are interested in applying this marketing strategy into your online business, feel free to check out my other article on how to build an email list with AWeber.

Email marketing will allow you to further develop the relationship between you and your audience.

This is done by you providing more helpful information on the topic that they are interested in.

While doing so, you can also recommend products and services that might benefit your audience as well.

But of course, if your content was not very helpful. The likelihood of someone offering you their email is slim to none.

This is all thanks to how frequently we receive spam. Whether it is through phone calls or emails.

Which is why people are reluctant to give you their contact information. Do you feel the same way?

Do Your Research Before You Recommend

I’ve seen countless affiliate marketers try to sell without doing the research first.

The people who land on your product review pages are looking for information.

If you are not thoroughly going over the product. They will just find another affiliate marketing website.

It’s like going to a car dealership to buy a car.

Would you rather deal with a knowledgeable salesperson or a salesperson who only cares about selling you a car with no knowledge at all?

In Conclusion

As an affiliate marketer, your job is not to sell. That the vendor’s job. Your main focus should be to provide your audience with the right information.

By doing so, you are going to help those who are on the edge of buying but just needed to make sure.

As long as you focus on helping your audience rather than earning commissions, you will earn more commissions.

Hopefully, you’ve learned a bit from this short article on why affiliate marketing is not just about selling.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment down below and I will try my best to help you out.

  1. Hey Eric,

This is a great break down on not being lazy about giving quality content and building trust with real people.

I run a blog and sometimes it would be easier to get lazy and start slacking on things. Since we both know that the easy way usually doesn't last or even get started in the first place, this is solid advice.

Thanks for writing some quality content to remind us about having an honest purpose and good intentions.

    Best of luck,

  2. Hello Dom,

You are very welcome! Blogging can be very mentally draining especially if you blog on a daily basis. That's why I recommend most people to save their ideas, create a draft, and publish them when the time is right. Also, I've experienced moments where I'm just too tired to really give a response, so I ended up delaying my response. I feel like that be more beneficial for yourself and for your viewers.

I wish you best of luck on your blog,

  3. Hello Eric,

That was a very informative article for Affiliate Marketers of all skill levels. Even experienced Marketers tend to forget about being more personal with their users. After all, those are real people coming to your website. You want to write in a way that seems like you're talking to each of them individually. Kind of like a good politician does without the lies of course.

  4. Hello Jack,

Thanks for your kind comment! Hopefully this will inform current and future marketers to remember it's viewers first before anything else. I like how you mentioned politicians without lies because that is very true.

    Kind Regards,

  5. Hi Eric! I love this article and how it really breaks down exactly what is needed to be successful and how to cater to your audience. I really appreciate the 4 different scenarios because it very easily explains what NOT to do, and then a reasonable correct response. I have my own blog as well, and while I LOVE getting comments, on articles where there are a lot, it can get overwhelming and temping to just give short to the point responses. That won't help anything though. Great article. 🙂

  6. Hello Jessie,

    Thanks for the kind comment! Yup, that's exactly how I feel when I'm tired. A good response even if it's not done right away is better than no response, or a poor response. (;

I wish you best of luck on your blog and feel free to check back for more articles like this.

    Kind Regards,

  7. That's a good wake up article, it shows the importance of treating customers like human beings, the way we would like to be treated. Not like a slick salesperson trying to get your wallet out of your pocket, the 4 scenarios are very soft sell and personal. Thanks for reminding me that personal contact is seriously important!

  8. Hello EJ,

You are very welcome and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I seriously believe we should reflect on ourselves and think about how we would like to be treated. If you can sell something to yourself when checking out your own website then you have succeeded. Best of luck in your current and future endeavors! Let's make money online(:

    Kind Regards,

  9. This rings a bell for me.. It is so true we should be ourselves and build a rapport with others instead of always being a salesperson.
There are so many people online and we all have a unique voice and if we focus on being ourselves and helping others the sales naturally follow..thanks for the timely reminder.

  10. Being new to affiliate marketing, this approach is not one that I have heard yet.
Make sense though, nobody wants to be "sold" to.

I kinda check out the Wealthy Affiliate program you have on the side there.
Can you tell me about their service and support. I continuously find myself needing some kind of help and it can take hours to find the answers sometimes.
    Thanks for a great read!

  11. Hello Felina,

Thanks for the kind comment! Hopefully most people after reading this article will understand the message. It's easy to just tell people to buy something, but it's not easy to explain and make them feel comfortable enough to actually buy it.

    Kind Regards,

  13. Hi, Eric,

Your article is really great “food for thought” for newcomers to online marketing, those thinking of jumping in, and those who are seasoned marketers who may need a gentle reminder about who their audience really is: people just like us!

I, for one, would fit into the first category, so your information is an eye-opener, because there are so many others out there trying to find their way in the internet world. It’s basically the Golden Rule, which applies in business as well as our personal lives.

Question: do you think added humor on a blog lends itself to making the blogger seem more real and approachable, or have you found the average reader is more likely to make a purchase if the material takes on more of a serious tone? I’m torn as to how what the best approach may be for me to pursue.

    Thank you,

  14. Hello Priscilla,

    Thanks for your comment! In terms of adding humor on your, it's good but not a deal breaker. My biggest advice is to be yourself because we are all unique! There are too many people who tries to do the same thing like the way they explain and write out their blogs. It doesn't work because you want to stand out(;

Be yourself and have a voice of your own and your readers will enjoy reading from you!

    Best of luck,

  15. While I definitely agree with your answer for the fourth scenario, wouldn't it also make more sense to also add something like:

"Like yourself, I did not know anything about affiliate marketing either but have gotten tons of information from taking this course as well."?

I have heard from various marketers that people also like hearing others document and share their experience as well.

  16. i've never really thought about the topic of selling yourself before reading this article. I was aware of personal branding to a small extent but i never really thought about selling yourself over selling your product.

this advice was very useful also because i think it is probably a lot easier to sell yourself than it is to sell tour product and as you mentioned building trust is very important in the seller/buyer relationship.

  17. Hello Jessie,

Thanks for the kind comment on this blog. I will definitely take the time to implement that! I don't really like to share my experience too much because I don't have much experience to share. I much rather give my opinion and try my best to help people understand the fundamentals(:

    Kind Regards,

  18. Hello Jacob,

You are absolutely right! You just need to have a positive mind set that wants to help educate others. Selling is important, because you need to make money, but educating and offering good advice is actually more important.

Truth is, why should someone take your suggestion and buy from a link you provide? First they need to trust you, so you need to be build trust by offering good information and tutorials!

    Kind Regards,

  19. I read 2 of your blogs, "sell your sell not your product', and your "wealthy affiliate" review. I personal opinion is that you have a very well put together website, everything is relevant, which shows that you know what your talking about when it come to giving the advice. I really liked how you created some humor in it also "Imaginary person" that is gold content in my opinion. I would like to ask were or how you come up with your logo of the raining money and person crawling out of the laptop. you wealthy affiliate was different than what i expected as a member myself i found it hard to pull away from your examples scenarios and your raw data on various things ex, the number of internet users online every year. over all i found your site informational, helpful, humorous and well put together

  20. Hello Nekko,

Thank you for your kind comment. The logo was found by my friend who sent me the image, but I'm thinking about changing it. I thought it was quite relevant to my niche of how to make money online(:

Thanks for the feedback on my writing style! I wanted to write as if I'm talking to you. Personally, I don't like reading, so I figured, why not add some of me in my article, so it can feel like I'm teaching you something.

To be completely honest, I don't know everything, but I do a lot of research, so hopefully my content is as accurate and informative as possible.

    Kind Regards,

  21. Hi Eric, This article presents some very wise advice for a person just entering into the world of online affiliate marketing.

What you stated about the business owner trying to sell him/herself to the prospective website visitors is so true. Too often people trying to make money in an online business as soon as possible make the mistake of trying to sell potential customers the product(s), instead of establishing the fact that he/she is a credible and trustworthy individual. As you stated allowing the website visitors to first get to know the business owner.

People trying to come across as oily salespersons, heavily shilling a product in a "get it now, or else it soon will be too late" kind of attitude will ultimately fail in their online business ventures.

The four scenarios presenting examples of what, and what NOT to do in interacting with website visitors is a must read for any "newbie" who has just created an online business for him/herself.

The two positive examples pretty much represent the overall philosophy seen in this article concerning an online business owner trying to present him/herself in the best light possible to people visiting a website!

  22. Hello Jeff,

Thanks for your wise words! Presently, I am in car sales and to me, affiliate marketing is no difference, but without physically interaction.

When you can't physically interact with your visitors, it's a lot harder to build trust, so that's why I came up with this topic. I've checked out many to seek advice, but like you said, a lot presents the sense of urgency which is great as a salesperson, but the biggest issue is why should I trust you?

Hopefully my scenarios give a good example to those who are thinking about becoming an affiliate marketer and give a wake up notice to those who are already doing it.

    Kind Regards,

  23. You are right! Always offering help will take you a long way and could actually make a sale. Sometimes I be a little lazy I must admit. There are people who only care about the sale and will tell you anything you want to hear. They won't be in business long because of that. I am actually learning to sell myself but I think it is easier when I am just being myself. Thanks for the info. Good stuff!

  24. Hello Kendrick,

You are very welcome and thank you for the kind comment! Unfortunately, there are too many people who are looking for their own best interest and forgot about the fundamentals of making money online.

    Best of luck to you,

  25. Yo Eric,
This reminds me of a friend I saw working at a car lot. One day I went to BROWSE for a truck. I had plans maybe to buy at the end of the year. The dude kept trying to sell me a truck on the spot. He wanted to know what kind of truck I wanted and how much I was willing to pay. Once I told him that he changed for the worse.

Salesman friend: "We have that truck here, if I can get it to that price would you buy it now?"

Me: "No dude I'm just browsing."

He asked his two bosses if he can make the deal for that price and the bosses said "yeah." Then they all stared at me.

Salesman friend: "My bosses said they yes, you should buy it, come on, lets go do the paper work."

Me: "No dude, I'm just browsing. Besides I don't like the color."

Salesman friend: " Come to my office I'll show you how to paint it. What's your email and phone number? These are our down payment options." He was like that the rest of the time.

I left that day annoyed. Then the dude starts blowing up my phone. He even called my mom asking about me, and then had the audacity to tell her "it's about time for you to buy a car." That guy is NOT my friend anymore.

  26. Hello Flowstash,

I apologize for your unpleasant experience! That sounds like a salesman trying to meet his quota for the month. That's why I feel the same applies here on the internet! Your viewers will more likely come back If you treat your viewers right and offer them solutions to their problems.

    Kind Regards,

  27. I love it! Great information and you are so right. Everyone needs to sell themselves and not the product. If you believe in the product yourself, then that shows thru with your communication and everything else that you say. The product can sell itself if one, you believe in it and it works for you, and two, you have had success which will come thru in your communications. So yes, I agree. Great and fun article!

  28. So totally true! You do have to sell yourself and not the product. I think that if the product is something that you are passionate about, have had good experience with, and are successful with, then it will sell itself. I love the picture of the salesman LOL. It is all about how you come across, how honest you are, and selling your ideas and your products...not copying someone else's success.

  29. Hello Matt's Mom,

You are absolutely right! Hopefully this will help new and current affiliate marketers think twice about what they are doing! I just laughed looking at the picture again haha!

    Kind Regards,

  30. Really nice article. Very good information presented here. I am fairly new to the whole online marketing industry and this article has allowed me to see where I am on the right track and where I should improve. Thanks for sharing such helpful tips here. The scenarios that you have given make perfect sense. It also makes perfect sense to sell yourself, nobody will do business with who they do not feel they can trust.

  31. Hello Jaedot888,

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment. I am glad my article helped you because that is my goal(: Congratulations on starting your online business! If you need any feedback, please let me know.

    Kind Regards,

  32. Awesome post, Eric. I love the examples you gave at the end of responses to comments. I think I should go re-read all my replies to comments to make sure I had relationship building in mind when I replied. It's really all about intention, isn't it? You also reminded me of another very important point - to keep in touch with my subscribers. Heading over to Mailchimp now to do just that.

  33. Hello Lauren,

Thanks for your awesome comment and I'm glad this article was able to help you better your business! If you need anything, please feel free to let me know.

    Kind Regards,

  34. This is really cool. I always wanted to quit my regular 9 to 5 job and start my own online business. But like always, that is easier said than done. It's just that there are so many scams online. They promise you this and that, and when buy their product, its complete crap, Worst part is you can't even get your time or money back that you've invested into it. So it's a challenge determining the real from the fake. Do you have any recommendations on where I can learn the ropes of internet marketing? Great article, definitely sharing this on Facebook.

  35. Hi Eric
It's been a pleasure visiting your informative site. I like your analysis of the online salesmen. It's so easy to be so concerned with making money online that we forget the needs of the client. It's also sad that when you do challenge that opinion by questioning the product offered critically, comments are disapproved. You've also offered some great advice for online business which I think focuses on things easily forgotten. The best of all is selling yourself and not the product. I definitely need to learn and work better at this. I do want to succeed online like you.

  36. Hi

Great Inforamtion on creating enormous amounts of value before you try and sell.

Creating Value and building trust are definitely the best ways to achieve long term Sales in anything. If a potential consumer sees you more as a Sales Person you are certainly up against it.

I appreciate your information and I look forward to some of your future posts.

  37. Many beginners including myself has been through this process of just wanting to make money. I think they key point here is to be passionate and really want to help people with the niche involved. Once, you got the mindset, the money part would be gone and people would trust you more. Only from there, you can start to introduce some products and if people are interested they would go from there, otherwise, you would still have already helped them to solve their problems:)

  38. Hi Eric and thanks for a very enjoyable and informative post on how to sell and how not to sell your wares on line.

The most important part of being an online marketeer is the trust. As you so rightly said, your customers need to trust you and your judgement before they will buy products or services from your site. This can be a lengthy process and if you look at those sites in your own genre of business, most of them will have been on line for years.

There's only a few sites I trust implicitly in my line of natural health and one has had his website since the 1990s! But, he is now a wealthy man and he is helping the general public to boot. Knowledge of your subject is of the utmost importance and always replying to comments is a must. Great article, thanks.

  39. Hello Garrett,

You are absolutely right, which is why I'm trying my best to inform people of a legitimate way to make money online. It might be a "GET RICH QUICK METHOD" but at least it is proven to work as long as you dedicate your time and effort into helping people.

Thanks again for your kind comment and I would really appreciate the share!

    Kind Regards,

  40. Hello Kavinah,

Thanks for your great comment! I agree and to be completely honest with you. There is always PROS and CONS when it comes to making money online.

    - If it's a scam, there is only a con of losing your money for nothing.

    - If it's a legitimate method, the pro is you can actually make money through work and determination. The con is it takes time.

I wish you the best of luck on your current and future endeavors!

    Kind Regards,

  41. Hello Chris,

Thanks for taking the time to read my article. I'm glad you found the information to be quite helpful. If you have any questions or require any assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me!

    Kind Regards,

  42. Hello Jacob,

Thanks for your kind comment. I commend you for taking the initiative to make a career online. It is not easy to make money right from the start, but with determination; perseverance will pay off!

I wish you best of luck in your current and future endeavors!

    Kind Regards,

  43. Hello Ches,

Thank you very much for the kind comment and you are absolutely right. The goal is to help and inform! If you can deliver both, naturally the money will come as gratitude.

Natural health is a great topic and benefits everyone! Regardless of competitiveness, just focus on your ONE and ONLY goal and that is to help and inform(:

I wish you the best of luck in your current and future endeavors.

    Kind Regards,

  75. Hello Christian,

The stranger has not built value into the product and him or herself.

  76. Hello Sam,

Thank you very much for dropping by. Most of my articles are keyed to helping internet marketers and sales personnel. I'm glad my effort is not wasted.

You are very welcome! Stay tuned for more content. I do upload daily tips and motivational articles to help others make money online.

  78. Hi Aurel,

Yup, the same applies to car shopping. A lot of times, you buy because you developed trust with the salesperson.

  79. My friend shared this article with me. You are so right about selling yourself. I work for a sales company and I've had many customers buy from me simply because they like me.

  80. Hey Linda,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I used to work in the sales industry as well! In a sense, we sell ourselves every single day. I still remember trying to sell myself into a job(:

  81. Interesting article! I just started an internet business and I can definitely see why it's important to sell yourself first. I tried to sell and promote products from the start and failed miserably.

  82. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for sharing your experience! At least you've learned an important lesson. There's no success without failure.

  83. Very informative article and speaks the absolute truth. I can vouch for this being sales for so long.

  84. Thank you for this article! I am new to sales and this really helped me understand why I am not doing so well right now.

  85. Hello Lieshella,

You are very welcome! I wish you great success at your new sales job. Have you ever thought about making money online instead?

  86. My friends have been sharing this article on facebook for some time now and I just decided to read it. Definitely eye opening and very educational. Thanks!

  87. Hello Stephen,

What type of product are you trying to sell? My word of advice is to build value on what you're selling. Explain to your customers the pros and the cons. Figure out what they need and sell them on how your product can solve their problem(s).

  88. Very true! I only buy because I am usually sold on the product, not because someone is asking me to buy.
